Spiritually Healthy

Spiritually Healthy

December 172 Timothy 4:19–22; Hebrews 1:1–4:13

Watching a movie one time is enough for me. I don’t enjoy reading a book more than once either—every book, that is— except the Bible. What’s the difference? God’s Word is the only book that is alive. It feeds my spirit. I’m hungry for it. I can’t tell you what I ate for dinner thirty days ago. I do know that my body assimilated the food I ate, sending nourishment to blood, bones, tissue, organs, and muscle. The human body is an amazing organism.

I am also a spiritual being, and a steady diet of God’s Word feeds and strengthens my spirit man. I may not understand perfectly everything I read; nevertheless, it is powerful in its working in me. We tend to overfeed our physical body and starve our spiritual man. That’s not healthy! Are you a spiritual skeleton? And we wonder why we feel so spiritually weak.

The Bible not only feeds my spirit, but it is also a skilled surgeon. “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Heb. 4:12). As I dig deep into God’s Word, God’s Word goes deep within me. More than a pinprick, it is a double-edged sword dividing, exploring, exposing, and excising ungodliness; it is spiritual surgery that only God’s living and written Word can do. Surgery can be painful but, at times, necessary to save a life. God’s Word is a skilled surgeon accomplishing what it must do in order to bring abundant life to the spirit man.

“As the rain and snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it” (Isa. 55:10–11).

A generous diet of God’s Word will keep me spiritually healthy. Click here for more information about a Zoom Bible study that will journey with you through the entire Bible in chronological order. Click here to order “Connections” from the author, or here from Amazon. God bless you in 2024!
